Repairs are usually the honest answer

A surprising share of the work we are called to replace can simply be repaired. A dripping tap is normally a worn washer, seal or ceramic cartridge rather than a tap that has failed. A shower that has lost its temperature control has normally scaled up a cartridge rather than reached the end of its life. A radiator that stays cold has trapped air or sludge, not a defect. In a hard water area like East London, things wear and fur up on a predictable schedule, and replacing the worn part costs a fraction of replacing the fitting around it. Where a repair genuinely will not last — a body that is corroded through, a unit whose parts are no longer made — we say that plainly too, because a repair that fails in a fortnight helps nobody.

Taps, valves and the drips that add up

A dripping tap wastes a startling amount of water over a year and stains the basin while it does it, and the fix is almost always a small one. Traditional taps use a rubber washer that hardens and perishes; quarter-turn and lever taps use a ceramic cartridge that wears or scales; monobloc mixers have flexible tails that eventually weep where they connect. We carry the common parts, identify which type you actually have, and replace the worn component rather than the whole tap where the body is sound. The same applies to isolation valves, stop taps and service valves — a seized or weeping valve is a small job now and a much larger one the day you need to isolate something in a hurry.

Toilets that run, rock or refill badly

A toilet that runs continuously is wasting water every minute and is one of the most common repairs we attend. The cause is almost always inside the cistern: a worn flush valve seal letting water creep past into the pan, a float valve that no longer shuts off cleanly, or a scaled inlet restricting the refill so the cistern takes an age to fill. All three are inexpensive parts. Beyond the cistern we also refit loose or rocking pans, replace failed pan connectors that let water and smell escape at floor level, and deal with slow or noisy filling. If the pan itself is cracked we will tell you — that is a replacement, not a repair.

Showers, radiators and heating-side repairs

Shower repairs are mostly scale and wear: blocked heads, worn cartridges, thermostatic valves that no longer hold a steady temperature, and leaks that have started tracking into a floor or ceiling below. Radiator repairs are mostly diagnosis: cold at the top is trapped air, cold at the bottom is sludge in the base, a damp patch under a valve is a leak that only gets worse, and a seized thermostatic valve is a head that has stopped moving rather than a radiator at fault. We work out which of those you have before touching anything, carry out the repair, and rebalance the system afterwards where the work has changed how the flow is shared.

Pipework, joints and the leaks you can see

Visible leaks on pipework — a weeping compression joint, a pinhole in a copper run, a waste connection under a sink that drips onto the cupboard floor — are repairs rather than emergencies, but they are worth dealing with before they become one. We repair or remake the joint, replace the affected section where the pipe itself has gone, and check the runs either side rather than fixing the one spot and leaving its neighbours to fail next.
