Radiator repairs and cold spots

Most radiator problems have a straightforward cause. Cold at the top usually means trapped air and needs bleeding; cold at the bottom usually means sludge sitting in the base, which a system flush clears. A damp patch under a valve is a leak that will only get worse. We diagnose which of these you actually have rather than guessing, repair the leak or clear the build-up, and check the rest of the system while we're there.

Thermostatic radiator valves

A thermostatic radiator valve lets each room hold its own temperature instead of heating the whole house to suit one thermostat — useful in a spare room you rarely use, or a bedroom that runs hot. We fit TRVs to existing radiators, replace seized or dripping ones, clean and service the heads, and rebalance the system afterwards so the change doesn't starve the radiators at the far end of the run.

Getting the size right, not just the same again

The commonest reason a brand new radiator still leaves a room cold is that it was chosen to fit the space rather than to heat it. Radiators are rated by heat output, and the output a room needs depends on its size, its ceiling height, how many external walls it has, what the windows are like and what is above and below it. A back bedroom over an unheated passage and a box room in the middle of the house are not the same problem even if they measure the same. Replacing like for like is fine when the original was doing its job, but if that room has never been warm enough, fitting the same output again simply buys you a cleaner version of the same complaint. We work out what the room actually needs before we quote, and where a larger or taller radiator is the answer we say so — and where the real problem is the system rather than the radiator, we say that instead.

Balancing — the step that gets skipped

Every wet heating system shares one flow of hot water between all of its radiators, and water takes the easiest path. Left alone, the radiators nearest the pump get more than their share and the ones at the end of the run get what is left, which is why the far bedroom is always the cold one. Balancing corrects that by adjusting the lockshield valve at the end of each radiator so every one takes the right flow, and it costs nothing but time. It matters most after a change: add a radiator, replace one with a bigger unit, or fit thermostatic valves, and the distribution shifts. We balance the system as part of the work rather than as an extra, because fitting a radiator without balancing afterwards frequently just moves the cold room somewhere else in the house.
